Skills Development When Doing A2.

Research and Pre-Production (Before Filming)

I've improved my research skills because before the course i never even used to do it. I only used to look very briefly in to other products. I now research into similar products and other things that have been created, focus on the target audience and extract ideas from the things I've seen.  Before filming i have learnt more about how important planning is. Making sure everything is ready and the group know what they're doing is very important as it helps make things run smoothly and the final product benefits from this. Things like location, actors, scenes and continuity have not always been the key things i think about when filming but now i have learnt that they are some of the most important factors. Things such as storyboards, location shoots, scripts are all things i have improved on this year. the thing i would most want to improve on when it comes to pre-production is the script. I felt that last year it wasn't done in depth enough and that some of it was improvisation. I also learnt about concepts and conventions that are used in particular genres and how you would associate certain characters with a certain role based on their look and they way they act. Looking into and researching the stereotypes also helped when brainstorming the characters. It helped us decide what our characters were going to look like, act like and appear to the audience. It helped us decide whether we wanted to go with the traditional or modern representation of our stereotypical character.

Production (Filming)

I have also learnt a lot about the shots that are used when filming and how important they are. How they are used purposely and that they are very thought out, also how nothing on screen is done by accident. Everything is placed there. It wasn't very time consuming as it took us about 2 days to film. It didn't take us long because of the story board and shot list, we knew what shots were where and what we needed to do next. The thing i would need to work on next year to help me improve would mainly be lighting. I found that last year we did't really take in to consideration how filming at night -with the quality of camera we had- would effect us. This is something i need to take on board in pre-production as well. Also, the acting could have been better on my behalf. I thought that it could have been a lot better and it would of made the production look a bit better and more professional. The mise en scene was also a thing i learnt about. We took photos of what our location looked like before and made sure that it all stayed the same in case we were to go back, we had to wait about an hour just for a car to move.

Post Prediction (Editing)

When it came to editing i would say that i have improved a lot. I knew a little bit about it before but we used Windows Movie Maker so it wasn't exactly at it's height of technological difficulty. For our previous production we used Sony Vegas Pro 9.0.From this we have learnt to prepare a bit more beforehand and really think about what we might need to make a good scene. If we can, try to get our hands on a better camera/equipment and try not to film in the dark unless we do. I’ve also learnt a bit more about using Sony Vegas Pro. Before I didn’t really know what to do but now I’ve learnt how to put effects into a video and how to create affects that make any video look more professional. I shadowed one of my group members and watched what he did, i had influences on how things were edited and what the finished product would look like. Before i start the AS course i would like to improve it more and actually be able to edit the clips myself, sharing the role. Thanks to the A2 course i also learnt about how important continuity editing was. I have watched many films where there have been mistakes and we did not want that for our film so we watched the clip and double checked. I have learnt a lot about how the effects on a film can create a better, more professional look to attract the audience. Although we did not use a lot i would like to learn more about how to create better effects.
